Alexis “Ally-Gator” Davis (13-5) began her mixed martial arts in 2007 with a loss to rival and fellow Canadian Sarah Kaufman (16-2) via TKO in the third round. It was a fight that established the Ally-Gator’s toughness and brought her to the attention of diehard MMA fans.
Flash forward six years and Davis is signed under the UFC. She is set to make her debut against former Cage Warriors champion Rosi Sexton (13-2) at UFC 161, which takes place June 15.
Since her first fight with Kaufman, Davis has made strides in her MMA career that includes capturing the Raging Wolf Women’s Flyweight championship back in 2010. She has won four of her last five fights, which include wins over fellow UFC fighters Julie Kedzie and Amanda Nunes. In her last fight the Ally-Gator avenged her loss to Shayna Baszler, who defeated Davis back in 2010.
Still, Davis will not have an easy octagon debut. Like Davis, Sexton has fought several notable opponents, including Aisling Daly and Roxanne Modafferi. Another similarity between these two opponents is their wins. Both Davis have and Sexton the identical amount of victories in submissions, knockouts and decisions.
When it comes to the ground, both fighters have extended jiu-jitsu backgrounds, which will make for an exciting battle on the mat and a treat for fans who love to watch fighters on the mat. Davis has finished her last two fights by rear naked choke and she could go for it again.
One slight advantage Sexton has going into this match, is her striking. She has black belt in Taekwondo, which she could work to neutralize Davis. Still, the Ally-Gator has shown fans time and time again that she can take the most powerful hits, which she proved in her performance in her rematch against Kaufman back in 2011.
Recently, Davis has made comments about facing UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey. If she can finish Sexton in impressive fashion, she may get her change.
