Once Miesha “Cupcake” Tate (13-4) made her own entrance to the cage, the tears went away and the battle had begun. As soon referee Kim Winslow shouted,” Fight” Tate came flying out of the gate and threw aggressive strikes at Zingano, who managed to survive the Cupcake’s onslaught and gained control of the fight near the end of the second round.
The Alpha would own the third round and finish Tate with a barrage of crushing knees and right elbow, dashing Cupcake’s chances of coaching “The Ultimate Fighter” against rival and UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey (7-0). The Alpha will now coach opposite Rousey on the next season of “TUF” in September. This will not only be the first season of “TUF” where men and women compete on the show, but also be the first season of the program to air on Fox Sports 1. In addition to coaching against the women’s bantamweight champion, Zingano will get a shot at Rousey for the title.
Although she may not have been well-known prior to the bout with Tate, the Alpha will find herself front and center when the television cameras start rolling. Tate’s continuing rivalry with Rousey may have made for more entertaining television, but Zingano brings several qualities to the table: Her husband owns and operates his own gym, she teaches a Women’s Only Fitness Boot Camp and she has an affiliation with Team Black House.
The Alpha is also a mother, which means she will have no problem handling any fighters who get out of line, during the taping of the show.
As for her match with Rousey, Zingano has an extensive background in wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which could provide a challenge for the UFC champion’s grappling skills. The Alpha also showed the world her ability to absorb punishment, taking everything Tate threw at her. Still, Rousey’s bread and butter has been the armbar and even the mightiest have fallen victim to it. If Zingano is not careful, Rousey could slap it on and make her submit.
Still, the fight is a long ways away and anything can happen. For now, all Zingano needs to do is soak up the win and get ready for what will be the biggest challenge of her career.
