Fabricio Werdum should fight Daniel Cormier

After defeating former UFC Interim Heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (34-8-1 1NC), Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Fabricio Werdum (17-5-1) is ready for his next challenge.

There have been whispers of a possible match between Werdum and Strikeforce Grand Prix champion Daniel Cormier (12-0). According to UFC President Dana White, Werdum came to his office and asked for the match.

Werdum is No. 3 in the UFC rankings, right under Cormier. A fight with the Strikeforce champion would be great for the jiu-jitsu expert.  With wins over Nogueira and Roy Nelson (19-8), Werdum has earned a fight with Cormier. If we were able to defeat the undefeated grand prix champion, Werdum could easily make a case for a shot at the title, no matter if it was against Junior dos Santos (16-2), who defeated him back in 2008 or current heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (12-1), who is set to defend his title against dos Santos in the fall.

As for the fight itself, Werdum would find himself in a classic grappler vs. striker match up. Although Cormier has faced a grappling expert like Josh Barnett (32-6), Werdum’s jiu-jitsu is on another level. The Brazilian’s striking has also improved as we saw in his war with Nelson and his first-round TKO victory over Mike Russow (15-3 1NC).

Werdum has had an impressive career in MMA and his latest run in the UFC could propel him to legendary status.

One Response to Fabricio Werdum should fight Daniel Cormier

I haven’t seen either man fight too much since I never caught many Strikeforce events, but I think Werdum would win this fight. Cormier did not impress me too much against Frank Mir. I know he has great wrestling, but I think Werdum will slap on a submission if this fight goes to the ground.

After Cain beats JDS, the only men that I think have a chance at beating him for the title are Werdum and Overeem. I think Jon Jones will move to heavyweight next year and immediately challenge for the title. There are some good match-ups for him that I’d like to see.
