Chris Weidman defeats Anderson Silva, ends six-year title reign

Chris Weidman (10-0) has beaten Anderson “The Spider” Silva (33-5) and become the new UFC Middleweight champion.

After a left hook that sent Silva to the canvas, followed by some quick ground and pound, referee Herb Dean stops the fight and Weidman ends Silva’s title reign of 2,457 days.

First, my hat is off to Weidman. Putting aside the “That’s what you get for being cocky” and “Anderson beat Anderson” responses, Weidman has ended Silva’s six-year reign and no one can take that away from him. Every fighter loses at some point and Silva was bound to eventually lose the belt.

Although he has been granted a rematch, Silva said he does not want the rematch, nor does he want to fight for the title. As much as I like The Spider, it’s kind of refreshing to see some new blood in the 185-pound division.

Weidman as the champion, this gives the fighters in the middleweight division some hope of becoming one day getting a title shot without having to worry about a dominant Silva at the top of the mountain. While Weidman is undefeated and can now add UFC champion to his resume, it is one thing to win a title, but it is entirely a different beast when it comes to defending it and you better believe that there will be fighters nipping at his heels.

As for Silva, it might be time for him to take a break from being champion and just be a normal fighter.

If he changes his mind and takes the rematch with Weidman, or come back to fight at middleweight, the response from the other 185-pound fighters would probably be similar to a commercial I saw in 2008 where Tiger Woods enters a locker room and tells the other golfers he’s back and they just groan and look at each other like “Aww crap, this guy is back.”
