Despite suffering a controversial loss to Phil Davis at UFC 163, former light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida is looking to step into the octagon once again.
UFC President Dana White talked about the idea of Machida facing fellow Brazilian and former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort, at 185 pounds. White also made rumbles in the media when he announced the possibility of The Dragon facing former Strikeforce Welterweight champion Nick Diaz. Unfortunately, White confirmed that the bout would not take place, due to “other things going on with Diaz.”
As for the possibility of fighting The Phenom, Machida took to Twitter after the main event between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and wrote that Belfort had not accepted the fight and that he is “sure” that White could book him and Sonnen.
In Sonnen’s post-fight interview, Machida was one of the targets of a verbal tongue-lashing from the Oregon fighter. Although I speculate that one of the things Sonnen “demanded” in his UFC new contract was a future match with Wanderlei Silva, I think we will see Sonnen vs. Machida down the road.
On the other hand, I would like to see The Dragon face The Phenom in Brazil, at either middleweight or light heavyweight. Both men have great striking, knockout power and good ground skills.
