The Cheney High wrestling team closed out 2014 with several wrestlers bringing home medals from the Dec. 27 Freeman Invite.
Michael Ferguson once again took the top spot in the 220-pound weight division. He won his first three matches via pin, including a 32-second pin over East Valley’s Adam Kirk. He defeated Selkirk’s Cody Hoffman via a 13-0 major decision in the championship round.
Braden Wirth (126) and Kodi Smith (195) both finished third in their weight classes.
After a first-round bye and a decision win in the second round, Wirth lost a 7-3 decision to West Valley’s Wyatt Davis in the semi-finals. He defeated Liberty’s Vince Fowler via a 6-3 decision in his final match of the tournament.
Smith won his first two matches via pin before losing to Republic’s Lucas Rittel in the semifinals. In his last match, he defeated teammate Devon Waterman via 11-6 decision.
Justin Randolph (170) took fifth in his weight class while Garrett Pederson (285) finished sixth. Tyler Thomas (126) and Cameron Wiseman (145) won the consolation brackets in their weight divisions. As a team Cheney finished seventh out of 16 teams with 84 points.
Before the Freeman Invite, some of the Blackhawks competed in the Tri-County Invite, Dec. 23.
Vance Wevers (132) took second place in his division’s B bracket. Wevers won his first two matches before losing to Mt. Spokane’s Max Walker in the finals.
Boedy Taylor (160) took third or fourth place in the B bracket of his weight division. After he dropped an 8-3 decision to Central Valley’s Ethan Folsom, Taylor received a bye into the next round. He ended the day with back-to-back first-period pins over West Valley’s Kiernan Sowl and Colville’s Kevin Martin.
Brannon Pederson (160) took fifth in his weight division while Smith finished sixth. Garrett Pederson (285) won the consolation bracket in his weight class.
Wirth, Thomas, Dalton Mauzey had wins but lost in the later rounds of the tournament. As a team the Blackhawks finished 18th out of 21 teams with 34 points.
Cheney kicks off the new year Jan. 3 with the Blackhawk Invite. They face West Valley, Jan. 7 in their first Great Northern League match of the regular season. The Eagles took third in team scores in both the Tri-County and Freeman tournaments.
