I’ve said before and I’ll say it again – Invicta Fighting Championships has always been a stage where women get a chance to compete on a big stage whether they are seasoned amateurs making the jump to the professional ranks or journey-women whose path led them to the Invicta cage.
Last night’s Invicta FC 12 preliminary card featured a fresh crop of fighters who looked impressive in their promotional debuts – aside from Livia Renata Souza capturing the Invicta FC strawweight title in her first bout for the promotion.
Despite not making the 145-pound weight cut, Latoya Walker looked solid in her fight against Peggy “Daywalker” Morgan. Walker used her solid striking to rock Morgan on more than one occasion. Morgan showcased her durability but “Black Mamba” came out ahead in the judges scorecards. At the top of Invicta’s 145-pound division is Cris “Cyborg” Justino but I think Walker could be a contender down the road.
In my pick for “Fight of the Night,” Sharon Jacobson was in a war with Delaney Owen. “The Dreamcatcher” used her wrestling to take down the “Scrappy” one but Owen was able to get out of those situations. Still, Jacobson’s grappling and control of the fight won her the fight on the judges’ scorecards.
In her professional debut, Sijara Eubanks, a multi-time jiu-jitsu champion, scored an impressive first-round TKO win over Gina Begley, who took the fight on a late notice. Eubanks not only showcased her grappling but also some solid striking. Eubanks, who has fought at 125 pounds in the past, moved up to bantamweight for the first time. I think she’s got a future in the 135-pound division, but we’ll see.
