Invicta FC veteran and Jacksons MMA fighter Jodie Esquibel made a triumphant return to the boxing ring last night when she defeated Mayela Perez via split decision (77-75, 75-77, 77-75) in a grueling match to win the NABF light flyweight championship at last night’s “The Takeover” event at the Buffalo Thunder Resort and Casino in Santa Fe, N.M.
Last night’s fight was Equibel’s first foray into the boxing ring in over a year. She came into the Perez bout with back-to-back losses against Elieen Olszewski and JiHyun Park.
Esquibel’s last MMA fight was in November 2014 where she defeated Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc. It’s becoming more common to see fighters – especially women – competing in more than just one combat sport.
Going back-and-forth between sports has pros and cons. The downside is you’re busier and you have a chance to injure yourself in one sport that will prevent you from competing in the other. On the other hand, you can take things you learned in one sport and apply it to the other.
Esquibel made her professional boxing debut back in 2005, winning her first three fights. The NABF belt is her first major boxing title.
