This is a short story I wrote for MMA Latest News
Strawweight fighter Paige VanZant is one of the UFC’s fastest rising stars. She’s been on a roll since she joined the promotion in 2014 with a third-round finish over Kailin Curran, which earned her critical praise and her strong over Felice Herrig. VanZant is scheduled to face Australia’s Alex Chambers at UFC 191.
But UFC fans aren’t the only ones getting to see “12 Gauge” in action. VanZant recently filmed an advertisement for Reebok, displaying her skills, notably a “ninja kick” close to the photographer which you can see below, VanZant also posted pictures from the shoot.
As someone who uses a camera on a regular basis, getting close to the action – whether it’s boxing, MMA or roller derby – can be exciting and risky. At the very least you want to protect your equipment.
VanZant made headlines earlier this year after she signed a sponsorship deal with Reebok, becoming the second non-UFC champion to do so. This raised some ire in the WMMA community as they felt that Reebok and UFC were overlooking then-strawweight champion Carla Esparza in favor of VanZant. What some fans didn’t take into account was that VanZant’s deal with Reebok was outside of the UFC’s own contract with the apparel company and the promotion had no real involvement in the deal. Although the Reebok deal has been a determent to most UFC fighters, there are those like VanZant who are getting an opportunity from the apparel company.
Of course VanZant’s kicks aren’t only limited to commercials. She’s been known to strike and stand up against some tough opponents with Muay Thai backgrounds – notably Tecia Torres and Herrig, who have years of experience in the ring. If VanZant can get through Chambers she could make a case to fight the strawweight champion, whether its No. 1 contender Claudia Gadelha or titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
