Alman on NXT Takeover: Respect

If you haven’t seen NXT Takeover: Respect, spoilers.

Even before Triple H took over NXT, there was speculation that the Game was going to one day run WWE and fans were concerned. Now it seems like we can’t wait over until him and Stephanie fully have control.

Tonight’s NXT Takeover: Respect was the latest in WWE Developmental’s live events. Like the past shows, this was one featured a lot of good wrestling. The finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic was a little predictable though it was good to see Samoa Joe earn his first WWE accolade. I think this will set it up for him and Finn Balor to fight for the NXT title in the future.

On a lighter note, I think this tournament served a couple of purposes. It gives Triple H and the NXT staff a chance to come up with new stories. It also gives tag teams a chance to stand out.

Asuka had a good showing with Dana Brooke, who could play a strong, mean heel. With the NXT women’s division a little thin, these two could rise to the top. I can’t wait to see Asuka in more matches.

I’m more impressed with Apollo Crews the more I see him. He’s got a great look, can move in the ring and has charisma. He’s still kind of in the “I’m in WWE” phase that every rookie goes though. I think this guy could be money. I like Tyler Breeze and he didn’t lose much in this match but it’s going to be an uphill climb for him to get on the main roster.

Then there’s the Ironman Match between Sasha Banks and Bayley. It was 30 minutes of good wrestling and great storytelling. It’s hard for wrestlers to be a heel in this day and age and it’s good to see that Sasha doesn’t try and be the “cool bad guy.” Her Boss character is kind of like her favorite wrestler Eddie Guerrero. Bayley gave a classic babyface performance where she had to come back from adversity to win in the final seconds.

What was great about this match was it took me out of the realm of belief. For a moment I thought Sasha was going to win the title. As the clock was winding down, I thought it could go to a tie and possibly sudden death.

All in all this was a good event. The Ironman match was the bout of the night. If Sasha and Bayley didn’t prove they were money at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn, they proved it tonight.
