Norman, Schmidt and relays team qualify for state finals


The Cheney High girls swim team had a successful outing in the first day of state competition.

Makenzie Norman became one step closer of defending her two state titles, finishing first in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.15 seconds. She took second in the 50 freestyle in 24.51.

Alexis Schmidt qualified for the finals in her events, finishing third in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.24 and sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:15.43.

The relay teams consisting of Norman, Schmidt, Courtney Hanson and Meghan Krantz finished seventh in the 400 freestyle in 3:56.58. The team took ninth in the 200 freestyle in 1:46.55. They initially didn’t qualify for the finals but Schmidt on her Twitter said another team was disqualified and Cheney will take the eighth spot.
